Everyone talks about newborn photos and first birthday sessions—but somewhere in between is one of my absolute favorite stages to photograph: the sitter stage.

Around six months old, babies suddenly have SO much personality. The smiles are bigger. The expressions are hilarious. They’re grabbing their toes, discovering their hands, showing off those baby rolls, and starting to sit up and see the world from a whole new perspective.

And yes, there is usually plenty of drool involved. 😂

As a baby photographer in Murray, Kentucky, six-month sitter sessions are some of my favorite milestone sessions because they capture a stage that changes incredibly fast.

What Is a Sitter Session?

A sitter session is a milestone photography session typically held when your baby is around 6–9 months old and beginning to sit independently.

The important part isn’t the exact age—it’s the milestone.

Some babies are sitting confidently at six months, while others need a little more time. That’s completely okay! Ideally, we schedule your sitter session once your baby can sit fairly steadily without assistance.

At this age, babies are usually much more interactive than they were during their newborn session. We get smiles, giggles, curious expressions, chunky little hands and feet, and all those tiny details you swear you’ll remember forever.

Spoiler: they change faster than you think.

Why Six Months Is Such a Fun Age to Photograph

Six months is this perfect little in-between stage.

Your baby isn’t the sleepy newborn you brought home anymore, but they aren’t quite crawling away from me at full speed yet either.

They’re starting to show you exactly who they are.

Maybe your baby is serious and makes me work for every smile. Maybe they grin at absolutely everyone. Maybe they think peek-a-boo is the funniest thing that has ever happened.

Those little personality traits are exactly what I want to capture.

And then there are the details: the rolls, gummy smiles, tiny teeth beginning to appear, wispy baby hair, eyelashes, toes, and those ridiculously squishy cheeks.

This stage deserves to be remembered too.

What Happens During a Sitter Session?

Sitter sessions at SaraB Photography in Murray, KY are designed around your baby and whatever they’re developmentally ready to do.

We’ll photograph your little one sitting, lying on their belly, playing with their toes, showing off those new skills—and probably trying to eat something they shouldn’t at least once. 😂

If they aren’t completely steady sitting yet, that’s okay. We work safely with what they can do.

I also like to keep the focus on your baby rather than overwhelming the session with props. We can keep everything simple and timeless or incorporate outfits, textures, and setups that fit your baby’s personality.

And because babies run the show around here, there’s always room for bottles, snacks, snuggles, and little breaks when needed.

What Should My Baby Wear?

Simple photographs beautifully at this age—soft textures, rompers, overalls, simple dresses, and anything that lets those adorable baby rolls have their moment.

I also have a growing client closet with outfits available for milestone sessions, so you may not need to shop for anything at all.

Although after photographing more babies at this age, I have officially decided I need approximately 47 more outfits in the client closet in every size and for every gender.

You know… for the clients.

Definitely not because buying tiny outfits has become an occupational hazard. 😂

What If My Baby Isn’t Sitting at Six Months?

Wait!

“Six-month session” is really just a convenient name for this milestone. Your baby doesn’t need to hit it on an exact schedule.

Babies develop at different rates, and there’s no reason to rush.

If your baby is six months old but still pretty wobbly, we can either photograph the milestones they are doing or wait a little longer until they’re sitting more confidently.

The goal isn’t to prove that your baby hit a milestone by a certain date.

The goal is to remember them exactly as they were during this season.

From Newborn to One Year

One of my favorite things about being a newborn and baby photographer in Murray, Kentucky is getting to watch babies come back to the studio.

At the newborn session, I’m carefully posing this tiny little person who fits in my hands.

Then they come back months later smiling at me, sitting up, grabbing their toes, and showing off an entirely new personality.

And before we know it, we’re planning the first birthday and cake smash.

That first year goes ridiculously fast.

Photographing milestones throughout the year gives you more than individual sessions—it tells the story of your baby’s first year.

When Should I Book a 6 Month Sitter Session?

If you’re hoping for a sitter session around six months, you can reach out before your baby is sitting independently. We can plan ahead and adjust the timing based on your baby’s development.
